IN THE BEGINNING GOD MADE HEAVEN AND EARTH.1 What is the beginning of all things except our Lord and “Savior of all,” Jesus Christ “the firstborn of every creature”?2 In this beginning, therefore, that is, in his Word, “God made heaven and earth” as the evangelist John also says in the beginning of his Gospel: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him and without him nothing was made.”3
